I was reminded again today of how handy it would be if I were a nurse or doctor. One of the boys’ eyes got bloodshot yesterday afternoon. I wondered if he was belatedly succumbing to the ragweed allergy that is plaguing me, but it seemed unlikely that it would only then begin to bother him. […]

While I was connecting the bush hog to the back of the tractor, I was greeted by 4 or 5 wasps that were rather annoyed with my jostling of the farm implement. Another trip back up to the house to get the wasp spray.

This evening I was blessed with an evening of fellowship with the dear ladies who attend our church. At first glance, that may not seem like a preparedness topic, but if you’ve given thought to morale and community in bad times, your church family may be very important. These are the people you have spent […]

I got up this morning and checked the survival blogs that I regularly read. I try to participate by submitting comments to let the authors know that I appreciate their thoughts and efforts. There are a number that I particularly enjoy. I’ve already mentioned the Bear Ridge Trading Post. I also like SHTF Blog a […]

Yesterday I branched out and “invented” a new recipe using good ole food storage items for a new Blondie (you know, a “brownie” without cocoa?). Anyway, it turned out pretty well and was gobbled up by my clan, so I will share it with you. Peanut Butter (Pinto Bean) Blondies 2 cups pureed, well-cooked pinto […]

Much needed rain is still falling in these early morning hours. I can hear it overflowing the rain collection barrel outside the window and find myself thinking how much we are not capturing yet because we have exactly one gutter on our old house. Another thing that needs attention… I’m glad to get another couple […]

This morning as I headed into work, I took a reminder of my life in the country with me. Most reminders, I enjoy. This one, not so much. I had accidentally stepped in pretty fresh pile created by our most recent security addition. I noticed it immediately upon entering my truck; it would have been […]

Went to the dentist today for a normal check up. Everything was fine, thank goodness. Going to the dentist is a white knuckle affair for me event today. My childhood experiences with a dentist were all very painful. I remember him telling me “This won’t hurt if you understand the difference in pressure and pain.” […]

Laura recently sealed some more food to our long term storage stash by sealing it into mylar bags. We didn’t have the 5-gallon buckets to place the mylar bags into so I went to a home improvement store today and picked up 10. I’m puzzled why they would sell the buckets and lids separately, but […]

The packages from Cheaper Than Dirt arrived yesterday. One box contained the red-dot scope and mounting bracket my Saiga .308. I haven’t had a chance to site it in yet, but I’m looking forward to it. The second box contained some additional magazines. I like getting those kinds of packages in the mail. I also […]
