The following article has been contributed by a fellow blogger and outdoor expert named Lee. It has been published with permission of the author. It does not necessarily represent the views of PreppingToSurvive.com.

For far too long, keeping an emergency food supply was seen as something that was only done by paranoid people waiting for the end of the world, or something similar. In recent years however, there has certainly been a boom in the amount of people who have realized the importance of being prepared.

Natural disasters, economic crisis, and power outages are just a few of the events of recent years that show us just how important it is to have one’s own food storage supply. If you are still not convinced however, here are a few more reasons why food storage is one hundred percent essential.

We Can’t Tell the Future

Think of keeping an emergency food supply as your own personal form of insurance. Nobody can tell us what will happen tomorrow, next week, or a year from now. But if you are prepared, you do not have to worry. The government recommends keeping enough food for at least 72 hours in your house. This way, should disaster happen, and you cannot leave your house, you will at least be able to get by.

Not Every Disaster is a Big One

Sure, in the event of a huge natural disaster, it would be nice to have a good supply of food. But not every disaster is as dramatic as an earthquake or a flood. Something as simple as a power outage or a lost job is far more likely to occur, and the need for food will be just as desperate.

It Is a Great Way to be Frugal

It times of such economic uncertainty, everyone is looking for ways to save money. You may not have considered it, but creating a food supply is a great way to save money. It will not cost you much extra to prepare it – just buy a little bit at a time – but it will slowly grow until it is a full pantry that you can rely on. If you do this, when hard times hit, you can dip into your emergency food supply and eat just as well as you did before.

It Is Easy to Do

There are a lot of companies that offer help in creating your own personal food storage. They have mastered the art of creating food that is non-perishable, easy to store, and delicious to eat. You can also create a food supply easily by just buying a little extra of the ingredients that you need whenever you go grocery shopping.

Teaching Your Kids Good Organizational Habits

If you have children, you know how important it is to teach them good habits from when they are young. Have them help you to create your food storage, and not only will the learn the importance of storing food from a young age, but they will be able to help you have fun with it.

Have your kids help you to come up with ways to organize your stores, and work together to come up with fun meals that you can try out and store for the long term. Good habits like these are ones that stay with a child forever.

It Can Be Fun!

And even if you do not have kids, you can still have fun creating a food storage of your own. There are a lot of fun and delicious options for a person to include in their food storage, and they do not have to try hard to find them. Food storage is as fun as you make it. Should the unexpected happen, you do not want to have to spend days eating something that you hate. So have some fun picking out food and creating good meals that you can eat and enjoy when the time comes.
