Friday Five

Friday Five January 18, 2013

This week it was really hard to limit the news and information to just five for this week’s edition of Friday Five from PreppingToSurvive. Here’s what made the list: the President gets armed guards for life, keeping Monsanto our of your garden, welfare spending exceeds the median income, Sheriff’s Department offers free firearms training for kids, and a Russian warns Americans to keep and bear arms.

Sheriff’s Department Offers Free Firearm Training to Kids

sheriff cruiser With gun violence fueling the debate over the best way to protect our kids, one Sheriff’s Department is taking another approach. Rather than trying to limit access to weapons, they are offering free gun training to children. The class is designed to teach kids how to safely operate a weapon, such as a BB gun, that they may have received as a Christmas present. From CNSNews.

How to Keep Monsanto Out of Your Garden

cucumberMonsanto wants in your garden. The corporate giant and GMO-advocate now owns 40% of the U.S. seed market so growing a backyard garden without supporting Monsanto is a lot harder than it used to be. But it’s not impossible. Colleen Vanderlinden over at TreeHugger offers some guidance on how to avoid patronizing Monsanto with your dollar. From TreeHugger.

Russian Warns Americans to Keep Arms

don't give up your gunsYes, it does indeed sound strange, but at least one Russian blogger warns Americans to never surrender their arms. To make his case, Stanislav Mishin recalls a time when Russians were one of the most heavily armed peoples in the world. Over time, those rights were taken from the people. Crime became rampant and the government became overbearing. From Pravda.ru.

Welfare Spending is Greater per Hour than the Median American Income

big governmentThe median income per hour for working Americans is $25.03; that equates to $137 per day. According to the Republican side of the Senate Budget Committee, welfare spending per day per household in poverty is $30.60 per hour or $168 per day. And, under the current administration’s FY 2013 budget proposal, those figures are scheduled to increase by 30% each year for the next four years. From Weekly Standard.

Obama Gets Lifetime Protection by Armed Guards

secret service for lifeChalk this one up to incredibly poor timing. Just as Obama is announcing that strict new gun control laws and executive orders are in the works, the President signs into law a provision that will give him, and future Presidents, protection by armed Secret Service members for life.
