Here in these United States, we place a very high value on honor and selfless service, on fighting for truth and justice, on having the courage to do what is right no matter the cost. It’s a time honored tradition, one that is deeply ingrained in our very being, to willingly take up a cause that is much larger than any one person.
No group of people embody that spirit, that determination, more than the members of our armed services. Their commitment, their discipline, their sacrifices, allow the rest of us to enjoy liberties found in no other place in the world.
To be sure, there are many things that give me cause for concern in the country I call home. I don’t agree with the direction our elected leaders are driving us. Our fiscal policies have all but ensured problems down the road. I believe that our country has drifted from the intentions of our original founding fathers.
But that has nothing to do with our veterans.
On this day when we remember the sacrifices of our service men and women and the sacrifices of their families, I am proud to call America my home.
I say thank you to everyone who has donned a military uniform and who has willingly agreed to put yourself in harm’s way so that the rest of us can lay our heads down at night and know that someone is standing guard over us.
God bless you and God bless America.
