I have been tearing through books lately and I can’t get enough survivalist fiction these days. About a week ago, I finished another one that I thought our blog readers may enjoy.
Apocalypse Law is set in north Florida. It is winter and this is the third severe one in a row with snow regularly blanketing that part of the state. No cause for the climate change is really stated but it is not uncommon for the temperatures to be in the twenties.
At the opening of the story, there are just Nate Williams and his son Brian left after an illness has taken a great many people, including Brian’s mother and sister.
Brian is an adolescent wrestling with all the things that boys do as they transition into manhood, but he’s being forced to grow up more quickly than usual. The world is harsh and becoming more dangerous by the moment. Nate is in constant battle about how to protect his son while at the same time helping him grow into the man he must become to survive.
They are blessed to live on the family farm and so they have a more steady supply of food than most. This naturally draws those in need to them, though they try to stay under the radar. With only the two of them to do everything, including security, they are stretched to their limits.
Interestingly, there is a neighbor character never introduced but often discussed. Brian thinks of him as a weird survivalist nut with all his advance planning and stocking of supplies. You can probably guess that Brian comes to change his mind about the neighbor’s forethought later in the story.
The book is quite compelling and action-packed. Most of the plot line involves security types of issues (tracking, surveillance, fire-fights, etc.) so I would characterize this as more of a “man’s book,” but I enjoyed it quite a bit and will probably seek out the sequel and other books by John Grit.
Have you read this one? If so, what did you think?

I’ve had to begin limiting my amount of daily apocalypse. Other wise it begins carrying over into my dreams. During the last two episodes of the “Living Dead” I was starting to dream about being in a house full of Zombies….

Actually that should be “The Walking Dead”, no the “Living Dead”

Yep, our minds can work in odds ways sometimes, especially at night during our dreams.
Thanks for the comments, Matt.
