Laura’s Prepping Diary: 9/24/11

Prepping Diary, Rabbits, Raising Chickens

I am a big fan of  Craigslist and other places where I can pick up useful items at pennies on the dollar compared to their original cost.  This was my treasure for today:

WARE Premium Hutch + Rabbit Run for $30!!  The list price for these 2 items new is a little under $400.

hutch

It is in preloved condition (it used to house some guinea pigs on the rich side of a nearby town).  It is just what we have been needing to give our broody hens a safe place to set eggs and tend their babies.  It’s hard to tell from the picture, but it has another “fence” piece that fits over top to keep raccoons, opossums, and other climbing predators out.

I have 2 volunteer mamas right now (one Silkie and one Turken) and another 2 that are thinking about it.  I may encourage them along by fixing them up some dark nests.

This will also be an additional grow-out pen for rabbits when needed.  I was very excited to score this today!

Found any great deals recently?  What will you use them for?

One of the great deals on Craigslist are 55 gallon food grade barrels for $25. These barrels have previously been used to store herbs. legumes and other food items, I would not store water in a used barrel (ymmv) but these are great for storing all types of other items.

    Thanks for that idea, Gaye.

I see those listed sometimes in our area, but for prices all over the board. We do plan to get some more to act as rain catches when we finally get more gutters up. We have a Berkey water filter, so we could use that water for drinking if needed.

Joe and the children got me one of those water bottles that filters water before it comes up the straw. I’m torn between trying it out (say putting lemonade in there and seeing if I can still taste lemons) and “not wasting” (filling?) the filter on a frivolous test like that.

Do they sell reloading stuff on Craigs List? I have heard of it but have never seen Craigs list.

Good question. I don’t think so. I seem to remember hearing a news article a while back about how the Craigslist founder is anti-gun and refuses to have anything to do with listing weapons, parts, etc. I did a quick search for “reloading” and only got hits for things having to do with paintball types of stuff, as in “quick reloading.”

I had forgotten about that article. It’s never occurred to me to look for things like that on there b/c Joe kinda takes care of all those things. I’m usually checking out “farm + garden” and “free,” along with “tools” and a few other lists.
