My daughter and her husband and their 3 kids are getting food stamps at the moment, They have been out of work and cant get buy just on his unemployment. He looks for a job as if it was a job 10 hrs a day 5-6 days a wk. She cant work due to current health issues. I was with her when she went grocery shopping last month and couldnt believe it. she buys basics, old fashioned oats and cherrios for breakfast. OJ, flour for baking bread ( I taught her a few yrs ago after i learned lol). Peanut butter for sandwiches, Hamberger, and cheap cuts of meats along with carrots and hearty vegies. eggs and milk. she buys 4 boxes of mac and cheese as "special dinners" for the kids they get 245.00 a month on her card. The lady in line behind us reprimanded my daughter because she told her 9 yr old twin boys and her 4 yr old daughter that they couldnt have a candy bar cause it wasnt in the budget. the lady called my daughter unfit and my daughter left in tears... I am sorry but all my good grandma feelings went out the door that day and I gave that woman a very loud and not so nice piece of my mind. I figured i would get thrown out of the store, but to my amazment after telling her my daughter didnt buy expensive or fast and easy items but gave her kids oranges from grandma's tree I heard clapping and realized a crowd had gathered. I am shy by nature so wasnt happy about this but as i loaded the groceries into the cart I left the store to loud clapping and hooting and hollaring. and a man followed me to the car where my daughter was still crying and now the kids had joined her he walked over to her and said you have one tough and proud mother there and here is a bag of candy for your kids . there must have been 20 candy bars in the bag.... when we got to her house we also found 40.00 in the bottom of the bag...sorry i went on and on but needed to share and vent that i guess thanks for listening.

Wow I almost couldnt even read this as I am phobic of mice and dont mention rats omg panic attack. I live by open fields and a canal so we get them ugh. I have tried everything but finally found something that really seams to work. Ok this is gonna sound crazy but hear me out take regular old fashioned moth balls (yes they smell icky) they have to be the plain kind not the perfumed kind. anyhow put them behind dressers, under couches, in sheds in with your food storage containers. One word of warning they are harmful if babies or children eat them, but they wont hurt your dogs, cats or most farm animals. Ok back to why your doing this. It seems that mice and rats are allergic to them like crazy and the min they smell them they hightail it out of their. just replace every few months and you can get them cheap even at the dollar tree. now be smarter than i was, I started in my sheds and worked my way to the house and basement well guess where they all wound up before i got it all done yep my house... I slept in my car for 3 days with a box of moth balls, i kid you not... but I am happy to say no more mouse destruction and no mouse droppings to be found.....

My family recently moved to New England and are in the process of buying a really old colonial home. For home school my sons researched and discussed daily life of the early American family. Meals were redundant and mostly a corn meal based diet. Butter, cheese, sugar and tea and coffee were luxuries most could never afford. Meat puddings were a familiar meal too. When I think of survival or bugging out I take into account that "life as we know it" may never be the same. It would be a luxury to pull together a full meal including dessert. Life sustaining food based purely on nutritional value to survive would be difficult, but much more important than planning 3 course meals for a bug out situation. We're keeping it simple.

Glad I found this site, alot of great ideas here. However I have to voice an opinion about something here. I am torn on the situation of helping others or just me and mine. I am a Christian and the Bible says we should be prepared and take care of our family, but it also says that he who turns his back on the hungry, hurt or lost is basically up sh++ creek. I assume many here of other beliefs but most I have studied have many of the basic same principles. I know its off topic but it keeps me up at nite. Also I too am one of those disabled folks I have 1/3 of acre which since i cant stand or bend long times I scoot on my butt and hand dig with a hand spade which isnt easy in adobe ugh lol.

Lee you seem to be the only one that gets it! Been prepping for 40 years much has changed over the years but tactics really don't... When SHTF it will pretty much be my wife & myself out here on our homestead - even though we are only 3 miles from town (12k pop -- 35 miles from big city) our closest neighbors are 1/2 a mile away... we have the ability to raise and be self-sufficient but our biggest concern will be security - you are so right about getting popped in the head from 50 yards. We have enough provisions to stay in the shelter of home for quite some time but eventually one has to move... Camo and evasive techniques will be all important and the ability to be the chameleon will be the basis of survival depending on situations. From warrior to old disabled folk. Warrior state - me 1911 on thigh - 9 mm keltec in jacket pocket - walter p22 in back pocket --12 ga auto & buckshot and slugs in hand and Keltec su16 223 on my back -- wife glock 45 thigh - same set up except 20 ga in hand and M & P 15 in 22 cal on back...the chameleon part WELL that's a surprise LOL knife cane - throwing knifes & handguns in strategic places ;) -- I would love to go on but I figure I should not let out my perimeter defenses... oh you need to that 223 or auto weapon to return the same kind of fire or you may be perceived as weaker.
